We love working with our amazing partner organisations across Dundee and this summer there were lots of opportunities for collaboration!
Football
Children’s football sessions are supported by Maher Chalabi, a former professional for the Syrian national team. We welcomed 40 children aged 5 to 12 years for our summer session at Showcase the Street. A busy afternoon! Thanks to Maher. Youssef and Fadi for leading the session.
How it Felt
We also had six amazing activities with Deborah Chapman and Rachel Simpson from How it Felt, exploring the five senses of taste, touch, sight, smell and sound. Families learned the basics of sign language and tried sensory smell tests using play dough with guest artist Michelle Fisher, tasted plants at Victoria Gardens, created food print paintings and many other sense related activities! Thanks also to guest artist musician Mark Urban for supporting families to create their own graphic musical score using instruments outdoors! We finished with a celebration day at University of Dundee Botanic Garden, which included a treasure hunt looking for ears! Many thanks to Rachel Whiteside from Victoria Gardens, Kevin Frediani and Karen Brough from Botanics for their support.
‘It’s great that my kids are getting to do messy play as it’s beneficial to children for stress relief and development.’ (Participant)
“That was really relaxing, if you had a blanket and a pillow you could sleep in there” (Little boy talking about Mark’s listening bin)
That’s so cute! It’s like a little fairy house” (Participant when seeing the mini clay sculpture example)
“I like that smell, that’s my favourite so far” (Participant when exploring herbs in the garden)
“We usually go away for the holidays but we liked to stay this time and we really enjoyed our time with Family Club and How It Felt” (Participant)
DCA and The McManus
It was wonderful to continue our existing valuable partnerships with DCA, the McManus and Dundee City Council Ranger Service. Families enjoyed finding out about the Dundee Women’s Trail and tried printmaking with artists from the McManus, thinking about the important women in their lives. We hope to explore this idea more during the October holidays.
Family Club had a great introduction to the Botanic Garden from curator Kevin as part of our DCA sessions. Artists from DCA supported families to create a new banner and bunting for ScrapAntics Wellgate Centre Community Space! What do you think?
“I haven’t done art since I left school, I forgot how nice it is” (Participant)
“Mum is my hero” (Participant)
“It was super fun. I like the clay station. I give it a 10/10” (Participant)
“Thank you so much DCA and ScrapAntics. We enjoyed today’s activities a lot. You people are very lovely, friendly, supportive. They motivate our kids and us as well” (Participant)
“I love the session today. It was very fun and I like decorating the banners” (Participant)
Dundee City Council Ranger Service
Karoline Hardt from ScrapAntics worked closely with Laura Blackie and Colin Donald from the Ranger Service to plan two activities on a Stone Age theme. Families are learning about the stone ages throughout the year and our two summer sessions involved stepping back in time to hunt, give thanks for what we found, forage, make spears and learn how to track animals.
“I am building a sacred monument” (Participant)
“I feel like I can be who I am meant to be” (Staff member)
“I have never been here (Templeton Woods). Now we can come back” (Participant)
“It is so good to have you (Colin) on this walk. Without you I wouldn’t know about any of this” (Participant)
Well done Flintstone Family Club!
National Play Day
We also joined with DCA and Dundee Science Centre to celebrate National Play Day, with activities for families. Over 60 families came along for mini loose parts play, junk modelling, printmaking and more!
“it was really fun in the scrap play and the painting defo coming again ❤”
“I liked making all these things! (marble noise maker + bus out of cardboard)”
“What an amazing play experience art + craft is a winner for all ages 😊”
“Nothing better than free play with recycled art. Lovely!”
Thanks again to all our partners. You are all so important in making Family Club a success.
Changes to Booking Places
For Family Club’s future holiday activities, it will only be possible to book for a maximum of three sessions. If a family doesn’t come to a session they have booked and have not let us know in advance they will lose their places for the other activities.
This is to be fair to all families. We have a large number of families who want to come and a waiting list for most sessions.
Please just let us know if you can’t come!
We look forward to seeing you all again soon for more Family Club fun!
